The 2023 harvest in Valtellina ended at the end of October, with overall positive results. The climatic conditions, which were far from ideal this year, did not prevent a good ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes, which reached a good overall sugar content and balanced acidity.
The grapes were inevitably marked by the spring rains and cold, which delayed the ripening and postponed the harvest by a week compared to the previous season. We have less production than in 2022, but with an interesting flavor profile, thanks to cool temperatures in crucial periods.
Facts and figures
According to data from the Consortium for the Protection of Valtellina Wines, Nebbiolo production in 2023 is estimated at 250,000 hectoliters, in line with 2022 production. Moderate production suffered due to the production obtained following the organic method, which suffered the most from the adverse conditions of this year, with average losses of 10%.
